In Gallery 18 Artists' Beit Midrash: Darkness and Light

Opens on Tuesday, April 1st, 2008.

Gallery 18 exhibits work from a newly formed cooperative learning community where artists have explored the theme of "Darkness and Light" in Jewish sources. By looking at the interface between aesthetics and Judaism these artists have created their own visual commentary on our sacred texts.

Co-facilitated by Rabbi Barry Dov Katz, CSAIR, and Harriet Balaran Finck, a noted painter/collagist and college instructor. Harriet's work is a powerful example of how classic Jewish stories can inspire artists to create their own interpretations, mirroring the depth of our classical commentaries. Classes were held at CSAIR.

Co-sponsored by the Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale and the Riverdale Y.

Re-Creation

On April 22, Gallery 18's next show, "Re-Creation," opens in honor of Earth Day. Re-Creation will be a group show of works created from a variety of recycled or re-used sources and materials by community artists.

The Gallery staff kept the spirit of the Jewish Value "Tikkun Olam" or "perfecting/restoring the world" in our vision for this exhibit.

David C. Leven, a graduate of the University of Rochester and Syracuse University College of Law, is the Executive Director of Compassion & Choices of New York. He played a leadership role in securing passage of legislation to improve pain and palliative care, and health care decision making. Voices of the Town - A Vaudeville Salute!
This intergenerational show covers the history of vaudeville in America (1875-1935) and demonstrates the breakthroughs for African-Americans, women and immigrants. Song, dance and comedy routines bring to life the stars of yesteryear. The forerunner of TV variety shows, vaudeville opened the way for countless luminaries. "Voices " has been touring local libraries, senior centers, assisted living centers, and universities. The show takes the audience back to when vaudeville houses were the entertainment Mecca. The portrayals include forgotten but important African-Americans and powerful female performers. This piece shows how performers survived two depressions, war, oppression, segregation, discrimination, and struggles for human rights. Vaudeville, real family entertainment, was the starting point for stars, such as, Burns & Allen, Abbot & Costello, the Marx Brothers, WC Fields, Fanny Brice, Bob Hope, Fred Astaire and more. This performance, followed by a dessert reception after the show, is proudly co-sponsored by the Classic Residence by Hyatt, a luxury senior living community in Yonkers.

JASA @The Riverdale Y Simon Senior Center

My Future is in America: Yiddish Immigrant Autobiographies, Lecturer: Daniel Soyer, Ph.D.

Explore the remarkable collaboration between an organization of immigrant scholars - the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research-and a group of "ordinary" immigrants who responded to a call to write their stories in 1942. These autobiographies, written by shop workers, small business people and housewives, describe Jewish life and explore the meaning of Yiddishkeit in the old country and in the new world. The great political and social developments of the time, as well as the minutiae of everyday existence are covered. Above all, these are great stories by people whose lives mirror Jewish and world history of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Dr. Daniel Soyer is associate professor of history at Fordham University, where he teaches US immigration and urban history. He is the author of Jewish immigrant Associations and American Identity in New York, 1880-1939, which won the Saul Viener Prize of the American Jewish Historical Society. He is a senior research fellow at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research.
