A Billy Jonas performance is an explosion of energy. In singalongs, bangalongs, whisperalongs, as well as improvised songs, his primary instrument is the audience. Everyone becomes part of a performance that reaches out and ". . . touches even the most hardened of hearts." (Fayetteville Morning News)
Concerts begin with a simple "tuning" of the audience; from there a whimsical trajectory carries listeners through stories of life, love, and triumph over ‘Murphy's Law.' Jonas' original pieces are played on fanciful "industrial re-percussion" instruments made from found objects. He sings in a clear tenor voice; his guitar work is adventurous, alternately percussive and lyrical.
Jonas' heartwarming work has been enjoyed across North America since 1987. Previously a member of the highly acclaimed duo, "The Billys," he has been featured at prestigious festivals and venues nationwide (see selected venues). Jonas has shared stages with some of the world's favorite acoustic artists, including Patti Larkin, Ani DiFranco, David Wilcox, Richard Thompson, and Pete Seeger.
In addition to his work with adult/general audiences, Jonas has generated an enthusiastic following for his family show. His CD "What Kind of Cat are You?!" caters to this audience, and received multiple awards including a First Place/Gold from AFIM (American Federation of Independent Musicians), and a Parent's Choice Gold.
Jonas also has released 2 video/dvd's for family/young audiences: "Everybody's in the Band!" and "Bangin' and Sangin.'" Both have garnered critical acclaim, including Parents Choice Awards; "Bangin' and Sangin'" received a New York Times "Best" listing.
Billy Jonas' performances will inspire, inform, and enlighten. His work is born out of respect and reverence, and seeks to honor the creative energy in everyone. Billy provides performances and workshops for adult audiences and/or family audiences.

A Trumpet in the Wadi
Wednesday, June 4, 7:30pm
A Trumpet in the Wadi, film in Hebrew, Arabic and Russian with English subtitles.
Based on the novel by leading Israeli author Sami Michael, the film tells the story of Thirty-year-old Huda (Khawlah Hag-Debsy) who lives with her Christian-Arab family in the Wafi section of the coastal city of Haifa, Israel and has embraced her Israeli surroundings by immersing herself in its culture. However, her world is turned upside down when an eccentric Russian Jew named Alex (Alexander Senderovich) moves into her apartment building. A diminutive, hairy, and none-too-attractive musician who enjoys practicing his trumpet late into the evening, Alex is instantly smitten with Huda and begins to persistently woo his new neighbor - who is not totally immune to his quirky charms. Despite both of their family's strong objections, Huda and Alex gradually fall in love with one another as they muddle their way through a new romance and come to terms with their disparate backgrounds. ~ Ryan Shriver, All Movie Guide
The movie will be followed by a Russian and Israeli tea and dessert reception and live music by local Russian Jewish musicians.
Tickets are $5

Summer Movies on the Back Deck
We tried an experiment last summer and showed E.T. on the back deck one Saturday night. Though the hour was late because of Shabbat, the crowd was enthusiastic.
We're going to show four films this summer, this time on Thursday or
Sunday night (so we can begin earlier, and start with cartoons!)
Our tentative dates are July 10 and 20 and August 17 and 21. We'll set up mats for the kids (who are invited to come in their PJs) and parents should bring lawn chairs.
All that's left to decide is which movies? If you have an favorite, email it to PerformanceSpace@RiverdaleY.org. Title your email "Summer Movie Idea".
Thank you -- see you outside under the stars this summer.

Riverdale Y Refuah Shlema:
A Circle of Healing and Strength
6:30-8:00 pm -- May 4, 7, 18, 21
Program information
The Riverdale Y Refuah Shlema is a new program, offered at no charge, of support for people who have undergone treatment for cancer. A place to connect with others who share these experiences can lead to new sources of strength. Our community center will support those living with cancer (or recovering from its treatment) and provide a place to help address both the physical and mental dimensions of regaining strength and your ‘self'.
This support group will pay close attention to the particular issues and concerns of its members, with the goal of addressing the needs of the whole person. As an adjunct to group meetings, the participants will be encouraged to participate in a Y fitness program of their choice and ability. Each week, participants will receive a Riverdale Y day pass, at no charge, to use during the week.
About the program leader
Bette Clark, Psy.D., is a New York State licensed clinical psychologist with extensive experience facilitating support groups for both adults and children. She has a private practice on the Upper West Side and also sees families in the Bronx and lower Westchester. Bette is a stage III breast cancer survivor and has completed treatment including multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation. She has completed many road races since, and has completed three marathons including the Boston Marathon!
