Aquatics

The Riverdale Y's indoor pool allows us to offer you swim lessons, aquatic exercise, and lap swimming all year round. There are classes for all skill and age levels, babies through adults. There are also specialized classes, like lifeguard training, and open swim time for families. 

Infant Splash: 6 months - 9 months old
This class will provide a baby’s first water experience! Very basic swimming skills are explored with lots of songs and play. Parent/Caregiver must accompany child in the water.


Tiny Tots Swimming: 10 months – 18 months

Tiny Tots are being taught to blow bubbles, submerge their faces and jump into the water. Songs and games are used to encourage the children and to provide a fun learning experience. Parent/Caregiver must accompany child in the water.

Tadpoles Swimming: 1-1/2 yrs – 3 yrs

With the aid of kickboards and noodles, Tadpoles are learning about breath control, proper arm and leg movements, buoyancy and deep water exploration. Level 1 is with the parent/caregiver in the water, Level 2 is without parent/caregiver.


Pre-School Swim: 3yrs – 5 yrs old

Pre-School swimmers are ready to move. This group will focus on body position, proper kicking technique, over-arm recovery and rotary breathing. Level 1 is with the parent/caregiver in the water, Level 2 is without parent/caregiver. 

Jr. Level 1 through 3 Swim Splashers: 5 yrs – 7 yrs

Jr. Level 1 swimmers will focus on body position, proper kicking technique, over-arm recovery and rotary breathing. Level 2 swimmers will continue with Backstroke, bi-lateral breathing and kicking on the side. Level 3 swimmers will continue with Breaststroke, sculling will be introduced to flip-turns.

Level 1 Swim Movers: 7 yrs – 9 yrs; 10 yrs – 13+ yrs

Level 1 swimmers are introduced to under-arm Backstroke, kicking on the side and the Breaststroke kick.


Level 2 Swim Gliders: 7 yrs – 9 yrs; 10 yrs – 13+ yrs

Level 2 swimmers are introduced to over-arm Backstroke, kicking on the side and the Breaststroke kick and the Breaststroke pull.


Level 3 Stroke Development:
7 yrs – 9 yrs; 10 yrs – 13+ yrs
Level 3 swimmers will be working on bi-lateral breathing, sculling and flip turns. Swimmers will also be introduced to Breaststroke and the Butterfly kick and the Butterfly pull.


Level 4 Wave Makers: 7 yrs – 9 yrs; 10 yrs – 13+ yrs

Swimmers will work to become proficient at flip turns, establishing and maintaining a swimmers flow line and bi-lateral breathing. Wave Makers are also introduced to four all competitive strokes: Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly.


Level 5 Wave Runner: 7 yrs – 9 yrs; 10 yrs – 13+ yrs

Swimmers are introduced to interval training. Wave Runners will also work to perform the four competitive strokes: Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Butterfly.


Riverdale Rapids Swim Team:

A competitive team for ages 6-17, with emphasis on teaching and refining competitive strokes, starts and turns; developing self-confidence and self-respect; teaching sportsmanship and fair play. We are a development team as well as a competitive team.


Jr. Lifeguard Training:

Teaches lifeguard candidates the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Candidates must be 12-14 years of age on or before the end of the course. Bring proof of age to first class. Candidates must be able to swim 500 yards continuously demonstrating front crawl and breaststroke, swim 20 yards submerged, retrieve a 10-pound object and swim back 20 yards.


Lifeguard Training Course:

Participants train to become an American Red Cross certified Lifeguard. This 35+ hour course certifies individuals in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, Standard First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Automated External Defibrillation (AED) and Oxygen Administration. Pre-requisites: Participants must be at least 15 years of age before the completion of the course and must pass a practical swimming test before being allowed to enroll into the course.


SCUBA DIVING:

Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, if you didn’t know that is what SCUBA stands for. Become a certified SCUBA diver with an accredited PADI diving program. Explore the world from another view! Call us for more information.SCUBA
 

Women-Only and Men-Only Swim:
Check our pool schedule for days and times of gender-segregated swim.

Note: All appointments must be made with the Aquatics Director Paul Taylor at ext. 239. Lessons must be purchased prior to class participation. Private Swim Lessons:

Private swim lessons are available for all ages and levels of fitness. Adapted Aquatics for Special Needs available.

Buddy Private Swim Lessons:

Semi-private swim lessons for adults and children. You pick your buddy.

Adult Beginner Swim:

Students will learn the basics, gain confidence and enjoy the exercise as well as the water.

Adult Advanced Swim:
Students gain advanced skills and become even more comfortable with the water to a point of exploring deep water, trying different strokes, refining their techniques and also learning to tread water.
