The Stars
Lillian Gish in
Way Down East (1920)

Opening Night:  Sunday, January 10, 6:30 pm
D.W. Griffith directed this tale of a naive country girl tricked into a sham marriage by a wealthy womanizer. She then must rebuild her life despite the taint of having borne a child out of wedlock.   (145 minutes)
The silent film will be accompanied by Ben Model, who for the past 25 years has served as resident silent film accompanist for The Museum of Modern Art. Ben composes and improvises all his own scores, and is also a silent film historian.

Carole Lombard in My Man Godfrey (1936)
Thursday, February 4, 7:00 pm
A deliriously entertaining “Screwball Comedy.” Carole Lombard is an heiress. William Powell is a man “down on his luck.” What starts as a game ends up a romance.  (94 minutes)

Rita Hayworth in The Lady from Shanghai (1947)
Sunday, February 28, 7:00 pm
Orson Wells both directs and stars in this twisting tale of obsession and deceit.  Though the motives may be dark, the characters are luminous. (87 minutes)

Lana Turner in The Bad and The Beautiful (1952)
Thursday, April 8, 7:00 pm
Vincente Minnelli directs.  An actress, a director, and a writer are asked to help revive the career of ruthless Hollywood studio bigwig Jonathan Shields. However, all three are reluctant because they have all been used and betrayed by him in the past. Won 5 Oscars. (118 minutes)

Marilyn Monroe in How to Marry a Millionaire (1953)
Sunday, April 18, 7:00 pm
Actually, three starlets for the price of one (Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe, and Lauren Bacall). In this bright and clever film, three friends seek riches but find true love instead. (95 minutes)

Audrey Hepburn in Sabrina (1954)
Sunday, April 25, 7:00 pm
Billy Wilder directs Humphrey Bogart as the romantic lead of this playful “Cinderella on Long Island” tale. (113 minutes)

Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra (1963)
Sunday, May 2, 5:00 pm (NOTE EARLY START TIME; includes light early dinner)
Our final discussion will be PRIOR to the movie, during a light 5-6 pm dinner, followed by the 3+ hour extravaganza that is Cleopatra! One of the most expensive movies ever made - a film fit for a queen of the silver screen. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor redefine the concept of “screen chemistry.”  Won 4 Oscars.  (192 minutes)
