The Riverdale Y has a range of sports classes for children and teens, as well several active basketball and soccer leagues for boys and girls from kindergarten and up.

Racquetball
Reservations for court time should be made by calling ext. 200. You must check-in at the lobby desk – your court will be held for 15 minutes before being reassigned. Please: no black or blue soled sneakers. Use of eye guards is recommended.

Indoor Soccer Program
Ages 3-5
This is a parent-participation class in
which both parent and child learn all skills needed to play soccer (as well as modified and lead-up games).
Grades K-1
An introductory soccer league which focuses on skill development, sportsmanship, and fun. Participants are placed on teams and play games.
All players receive a soccer t-shirt.
Indoor Soccer for Older children
Grades 2-5
This hour of soccer will consist of 20-30 minutes of skill instruction and then 30 minutes of scrimmaging.  Lace up your sneakers and come ready to have fun!

Get the ball rolling! Join Super Soccer Stars, New York City’s most popular soccer development program, right here at the Riverdale Y. Dynamic international coaches work with every student to develop skills, self-confidence, and teamwork in a fun, noncompetitive environment. Positive reinforcement and a low child-to coach ratio ensure that each child will improve his or her soccer skills through engaging warm-ups, drills, and games—all while having endless fun! Elementary Gymnastics

For children 3 to 5 years, an introduction to basic
gymnastics skills, emphasizing strength, balance, and coordination. Students will develop skills in floor exercises, balance beam, vaulting, and tumbling. Class includes jumping exercises in a Bounce Castle. Instructor: Alsou Ochtcheptkova.

Basic Gymnastics

For children Grades 1 and 2

USA Goju-Ryu Karate-Do Children
These classes are designed to give children the ability to enhance their coordination, discipline and concentration through a series of self-defense orientated exercises that are taught in a controlled, non-violent manner. In addition, children will learn how to embrace the concepts of honor, justice, benevolence, courtesy and modesty while providing a safe, structural environment to help them overcome their fears, anxieties, reactions and
habits. As with most traditional martial arts schools, a system of rewards and recognition is in place for children to demonstrate their newly acquired mental and physical skills. The former State, National, World-rated martial arts athlete, Julio Rodriguez, teaches the classes. He holds black belts in 3 different martial arts systems (USA Goju-Ryu, Taekwondo and Jujitsu). Mr. Julio Rodriguez is also a Colgate and Columbia University alumnus and is currently a professor of science in the New York State Public School System. Since this is an exclusive specialty course designed for children, registration for classes is by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, please call (917) 468-4123 and ask for Mrs. Rodriguez. Registration begins the last two weeks in August 2010. Depending upon student enrollment, your child can participate in our exciting program on the following days and times:

Karate-Do (Teens and Adults)
These classes are designed for those who want to enhance their flexibility, coordination, discipline, self-confidence, physical strength, concentration and self-awareness. It is also a splendid form of self-defense that uses circular blocking, evasive maneuvers, meditation, and powerful hand/foot techniques.
These physical exercises along with basic traditional mental martial arts concepts such as honor, justice, courage, loyalty, courtesy, veracity, benevolence and modesty are taught in a controlled, non-violent manner.

The Art of the Samurai Sword
Adults: 14 Sundays, 2:30-4:00pm
This ancient martial art has modern practical fitness goals in mind. Training includes a mental and physical (cardio and strength) workout. In class, students wear traditional uniforms and use metal and wooden swords, learning the complete art of the Samurai. Beginners and returning students welcome. Instructor: Gregory Zenon, Kyoshi Black Belt in Samurai Sword (Iai-Jutsu and Ken-Jutsu). Kyoshi Level Sensei, Fukasa-Ryu Bujutsu Ryu, fully Asian accredited.

Women’s Self Defense
Sundays,12:45 – 2:00 pm
This class is intended for women who are interested in Physical Fitness, Concentration, Coordination, Confidence, Discipline & Awareness under the realm of Self-Defense. Those who choose this class will be able to sculpt and tone their bodies while gaining knowledge on using the swift hand and foot-techniques of USA GOJU-RYU KARATE, in a non-violent way, to protect
themselves, as well as their loved ones. It is a practical, motivational and confidence building class that will surely enhance your mind, as well as your body. The class is taught by Sempai Crystal Rodriguez. Registration for classes are held during the last two weeks of August 2010, and is by Appointment Only!
