Lehman College

The Lehman College Office of Continuing Education is pleased to announce an exciting collaboration with the Riverdale Y. Lehman will be offering a series of new classes at the Riverdale Y. In addition to the Y classes, Lehman offers professional certificate programs in Bookkeeping and Accounting, Information Technology, Health Information Management (Medical Billing and Coding), Allied Health, Teacher Certification Exam Preparation, Childcare, Professional and Personal Development, and programs for mature adults, children and teens.
 
Lehman College Continuing Education classes are taught by professionals and experts in their fields. Music, performing art and art classes are taught by internationally renowned performing artists, like Rosemary George (singing) and working artists, who have extensive teaching experience. Business classes are led by university level economic teachers and experienced financial advisors/analysts. Language classes and writing classes are taught by language specialists and experienced writers.
Cooking classes are conducted by teachers trained at culinary institutes and with catering experience. The instructors have both the education, training, working and teaching experience to provide students with not only a sound theoretical background, but also a practical application of what they have learned.

 

RIY 13: Understanding Abstract Art: Art from the 19th to 21st Century
Abstract art has a different vocabulary than the more traditional forms of art. It is exciting to know how we can visualize the artist’s colors, forms, and shapes; to be able to discover and interpret the content of this style of drawing and painting. This class explores and teaches you how to accomplish this.

An overview of art works from the Renaissance to modern masters. Delve into the influences of history and culture on the works, exploring the concept of style, diversity and differentiation among the art forms and artists.

RIY 01: An Introduction to Creative Drawing and Painting
Have you ever wanted to draw or paint but did not know how to begin? This course is designed to enhance artistic ability while providing technical instruction. Approaches to the elements of color, composition, design and perspective coupled with individual and group demonstrations are covered. Students may work from still life, nature or masters’ works and with the medium of their choice. Open to students at all levels. A list of materials will be provided prior to the first class.(Materials are not included in tuition).

RIY 72: The Romantic Piano
From Beethoven sonatas to the music of Chopin, Brahms and Liszt, this class takes you on a musical and historical journey into some of the most beautiful music ever written, during a time when the grand piano influenced a wide range of color, style, form and emotion. Participants study the differences and similarities between the composers, as well as to the social and political implications of 19th Century Europe.
