Jewish Life

At the Riverdale Y, our programs reflect our commitment to the core Jewish values of avodah (service to each other and to our world), hesed (acting with caring and kindness towards those in need), and kehilla (building and sustaining community). These ethical principles are woven throughout our programs, whether it’s through canned goods collection in our lobby; our facility-wide greening initiative; the hot lunches we serve our seniors; the basketball league that promotes health and raises money for tzedakah (charity) through its "hoopathon;" or the Youthmarket we launched in partnership with Riverdale Neighbhorhood House and CENYC in the summer of 2008. We also offer more formal opportunities for Jewish education and celebration through our annual Riverdale Jewish Festival of the Arts, our Jewish International Film Festival, Breadfest and our Café Ma’ayan Salon Speakers Series. We look forward to partnering with you in our ongoing work of tikkun olam (repairing the world).
Jewish Education “Community Garden” at the Y
The Riverdale Y has created a “community garden” for Jewish education in Riverdale – synagogues will each tend their own “garden plot” and nourish
the community’s intellectual and spiritual growth. Join in some or all of the learning and exploring that will be offered at the Y this coming year by many
of our Riverdale synagogues.
