An Ethical Start Curriculum
Enhancing the Lives of Riverdale Y Early Childhood Teachers, Children and their Families
The Riverdale Y Early Childhood Center is pleased to announce the continued partnership with the JCC Association. An Ethical Start is a curriculum program developed by JCC Association of North America to enrich the Jewish environment of community center Early Childhood Programs through the teaching of Jewish values. By focusing on values, the program goes beyond holidays and ritual to bring home the message that Jewish tradition is relevant every day. Throughout the year teachers and parents learn that Jewish tradition can be a guide to the most challenging issues of child-rearing, addressing topics such as friendship, self-esteem, community and caring for others. The Ethical Start curriculum is based on teachings contained in Pirkei Avot, Ethics of the Fathers (and Mothers), a classical Jewish text.
An Ethical Start is an ambitious and comprehensive program that has three components: professional development for teachers, an enriched hands-on curriculum for children, and family participation. The JCC Association provides materials, training, teacher support and ongoing consultation to implement the program. The Y's Early Childhood Center aims to incorporate the Ethical Start program in each of the school's classrooms.
