Pharoah’s Daughter Concert
Feburary 28, 8pm
Blending a psychedelic sensibility and a Pan-Mediterranean sensuality, Basya Schechter leads her band, Pharaoh's Daughter, through swirling Hasidic chants, Mizrachi and Sephardi folk-rock, and spiritual stylings filtered through percussion, flute, strings and electronica. Their sound has been cultivated by Basya's Hasidic music background and a series of trips to the Middle East, Africa, Israel, Egypt, Central Africa, Turkey, Kurdistan and Greece. She began retuning her guitar to sound like a cross between an Arabic oud and a Turkish saz, with harmonic minor melodies, and odd time signatures. A concert not to be missed!

The General (1927)/Ben Model
Saturday Night Films
October 18, at 8pm
Starring: Buster Keaton,
Marion Mack
Director: Buster Keaton
Not only is it considered Buster Keaton's greatest film, it is also widely recognized as one of the true masterpieces of American cinema. The visually-stunning silent film is undoubtedly one of the greatest comedies ever made, with non-stop physical comedy and sight gags, shot almost entirely aboard moving trains. Keaton created this great comedy out of an authentic episode of American history during the Civil War - a story about a famous locomotive, though in real-life the locomotive was stolen by the Confederates. The two things devoted Confederate engineer Johnny Gray (Keaton) loves most in the world are his Southern belle sweetheart (Mack) and his beloved locomotive named The General. When Northern spies steal the latter (with his kidnapped girlfriend on board), the intrepid Confederate heroically risks his life. He hijacks another locomotive, pursues them, and single-handedly takes on the entire Union army in order to rescue both of his loves. Filmed against a backdrop of magnificently photographed Civil War battle scenes, it also contains one of the great chases in movie history.Live musical accompaniment for the film by Ben Model, silent film accompanist for the Museum of Modern Art; Model will also introduce the film and answer questions following the screening

My Neighbor Totoro
November 9, at 10:30am
JAPAN, HAYAO MIYAZAKI, 2006, 81 MIN
RECOMMENDED AGES: ALL AGES RATED: G
BEST OF NYICFF - A story of two sisters' encounter with a family of forest sprites called Totoros, gentle but powerful creatures who live in an ancient camphor tree and are seen only by children. Based on Miyazaki's own childhood imaginings, Totoros look like oversized pandas with bunny ears. They take the girls on spinning-top rides through the tree tops and introduce them to a furry Catbus--a nod to Lewis Carroll's Cheshire Cat. But beneath the film's playfulness and narrative simplicity lie depths of wisdom. My Neighbor Totoro is about humanity's relationship to the Earth. This dubbed English language version features the voices of Dakota and Elle Fanning, supervised by Pixar's John Lassetter.
Help! I'm a Fish
November 9, at 1pm
DENMARK, FJELDMARK/HEGNER, 2000, 72 MIN
RECOMMENDED AGES: 4 TO 10 RATED: UNRATED
From the Academy Award nominated director Stefan Fjeldmark comes this beautifully animated undersea adventure about three kids who stumble upon the hidden cave-laboratory of mad professor MacKrill and drink a potion that transforms them into sea creatures. When the only bottle of antidote falls into the hands (or fins!) of a lowly pilot fish, Joe, he acquires the power of speech and a tyrannical desire for world control-and it is up to the beflippered threesome to foil Joe, save the world, and turn themselves once more into humans. Action is propelled by a super-catchy Europop soundtrack and the mix of computer and cel animation includes stunning, hand-painted undersea backgrounds. Featuring the voices of Monty Python's Terry Jones as MacKrill and Alan Rickman as the devilishly campy villain, Joe.

ESTONIA, ERNITS/POLDMA, 2006, 81 MIN
RECOMMENDED AGES: 3 TO 8 RATED: NR
This first feature-length animated film from Estonia is a gentle spirited film full of wacky contraptions, silly/happy songs, and a warm and refreshingly uncynical sense of humor. Lotte is a cheerful girl-dog who lives in Gadgetville, a village crazy about inventing Rube Goldberg-esque machines. Every year Lotte's father wins the competition of best homemade inventions. But this year, the town is abuzz about the Japanese bee Susumu, who introduces Gadgetville to the concept of judo. After the town becomes obsessed with the sport, Lotte and her three friends try to help Susumu get back to Japan, to test their new skills in an international judo contest.
Viva Cuba!
November 16, at 1pm
CUBA, JUAN CARLOS CREMATA MALBERTI, 2005, 80 MIN RECOMMENDED AGES: 8 TO 16 RATED: UNRATED
Juan Carlos Cremata Malberti's lightning-paced, road-movie, fairy-tale follows the adventures of two young runaways, Malu (Malu Tarrau Broche) and Jorgito (Jorgito Milo Avila), as they embark on a rollicking odyssey from the streets and schools of Havana across the length of the island by train, bus, car, motorcycle, oxcart, and on foot, in search of Malu's father. Filmed with Amelie-style whimsy and brimming with visual humor, Viva Cuba has charmed and captivated festival-goers from London to Toronto to Cannes, and was Cuba's official entry to the 2006 Academy Awards. But beneath the surface appeal of quick edits and stunning rural landscapes, the film resonates with warmth and sincerity and offers a rare window into the complex social and political landscape of Cuba as viewed through the eyes of a child.
