Garden of Happiness – Interfaith Community Event

A coalition of community groups including the Conservative Synagogue Adath Israel of Riverdale, Christ Church Riverdale, HGI: Holocaust, Genocide, and Interfaith Education Center at Manhattan College along with other community faith groups will join forces with gardeners in the Melrose section of the Bronx to restore and enhance the Community Garden of Happiness (2158 Prospect Avenue, Bronx, NY) on Sunday, June 11, 2017. The first team will work from 10am – Noon. The second shift will work from 1-3 pm. From Noon to one, a light lunch will be served.

The Garden of Happiness was established in 1988 by Karen Washington, a community activist who was once called “urban farming’s de facto godmother.” Partnering with neighbor Jose Lugo, they created a 36-plot community garden for people who live near the Bronx Zoo.

This day in the garden is being organized by Bob Jacobs, a Riverdale resident, who said, “I am looking for people who believe that now is the time to do something real and meaningful to help heal and restore our broken earth. Our goal is to come together as a community and restore one green space, garden and urban farm at a time. No experience needed except for a caring heart and a willingness to sweat and smile.”
