Afya (Medical Supply Packaging)

Medical for All!

Afya provides an environmentally-sensitive, community-oriented solution to help address the critical shortage of medical supplies in underserved communities around the world. You too can be part of the solution, by joining other community volunteers  in preparing hundreds of pounds of products to be shipped.

Supply Packing (Shift I) – 75 volunteers work to package 5,400 lbs

  • Time: 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm
  • Location: The Riverdale Y Multipurpose Room
  • Good for: Families and boomers

Supply Packing (Shift II) – 75 volunteers work to package 5,400 lbs 

  • Time: 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

MSAWI

It is a small and powerful action showing U.S. troops they are remembered and cared for.

The Institute is committed to supporting U.S. troops stationed overseas and domestically. It seeks to increase awareness of the sacrifices our service people make on our behalf each and every day through education and community engagement. Volunteers will prepare care packages and letters to U.S. troops currently in deployment.

Set Up: 10 Volunteers

  • Time: 10:00 am – 11:00 am
  • Age Range: 4 – 99
  • Good for: Families and Older Adults

Care Packages: 50 Volunteers

  • Time: 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
  • Good for: Families and Older Adults

Sky Mural

Beautify the art room by creating a ceiling mural using ceiling tiles for the art room.

Introduction to volunteerism at the Riverdale Y by using the provided art supplies, get messy while having fun, listening to music and beautifying our art room. Learn about why this is a service project for the MLK by participating in learning about the types of service our community has to offer.

Mural: 30 Volunteers

  • Time: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
  • Location: Riverdale Y Art Room
  • Age Range: 4 – 104
  • Good for: families, teens, and retirees

General Assistance

In order for this event to happen, we need volunteers for general assistance.

Set Up: 10 volunteers needed from 8:00 am to 10:00 am.

Registration: 4 volunteers needed for registration from 8:30 am to 11:00 am and from 11:00 am – 2:30 pm.

Traffic Control: 4 volunteers needed from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm and from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm.

Break Down/Clean Up: 10 volunteers needed for break down and clean up from 4:00 pm to 5.30 pm

Rise Against Hunger (Food Packaging)

“Rise” up early to do your part in combating world hunger.

Rise Against Hunger is an international hunger relief non-profit organization that coordinates the packaging and distribution of food and other life-changing aid to people in developing nations. Join us as the Riverdale Y seeks to package over 15,000 meals, with your help!

Set Up – 10 strong volunteers to unload the truck and set up workstations

  • Time: 9:00 am – 10:00 am
  • Location: The Riverdale Y Gymnasium
  • Good for: Fit bodies who can lift up to 50lbs

Meal Packing (shift 1) – 65 volunteers work in assembly lines to package 15,000 meals

  • Time: 10:15 am – 11:15 am
  • Location: The Riverdale Y Gymnasium
  • Good for: Families and boomers

Meal Packing (shift 2) – 65 volunteers work in assembly lines to package 15,000 meals

  • Time: 11:30 am – 12:30 pm
  • Location: The Riverdale Y Gymnasium
  • Good for: Families and boomers

Pack Up – 10 strong volunteers to clear the gym and pack the truck

  • Time: 12:45 pm – 1:45 pm
  • Location: The Riverdale Y gymnasium
  • Good for: Fit bodies who can lift up to 50lb

 

Amalgamated (NORC) Intergenerational Mural Project

Amalgamated Community, a diverse middle class community that houses a NORC will participate in a Mural Creation project while teaching its history to the younger generations.

Amalgamated Coop, a community in existence since the 1920s, will share its collective history between cooperators and volunteers, in order to learn lessons from the past, and move into the brighter future. The goal is to involve the NORC cooperators and the local elementary school to learn about each other.

  • Good for: Elementary aged kids, Teens, Adults, Families, Retirees

American Red Cross

American Red Cross babysitting and child care courses can help you provide quality care to children of all ages.

The American Red Cross is the nation’s leader in babysitting classes and child care training – and will prepare you to become one of the most capable, trusted and in-demand sitters in your neighborhood.

Babysitting/Child Care Training: 20 Volunteers
