JCC Maccabi Games

The JCC Maccabi Games® are an Olympic-style sporting competition held each summer in North America and is the second-largest organized sports program for Jewish teenagers in the world. The Maccabi Movement began in 1895 when the first all-Jewish sports club was formed in Constantinople. The first world Maccabiah Games were held in Israel in 1932. Now, this two-week competition takes place every four years and has featured many world-class Jewish athletes including Mark Spitz (swimming), Mitch Gaylord (gymnastics), Ernie Grunfeld and Danny Schayes (basketball), Brad Gilbert and Dick Savitt (tennis).

The JCC Maccabi Games are a five-day sports competition for Jewish athletes ages 13 – 16 (as of July 31, 2020). The Y is excited to be a co-sponsor of these Games right in our backyard, and we’re already building our delegation! Tryouts for the 14 and under boys basketball teams will be in the coming weeks. For athletes in other team sports, please contact us for information on how you can participate. We also invite individual athletes to compete in swimming, tennis, e-sports, and more (see below for the list). If you’re interested in participating or if you have questions, please contact us at Maccabi@RiverdaleY.org. For more information on the Games, please go to jccmaccabigames.org and check out the video below.

Please note: The registration fee is $1,500, which includes all food, lodging, events, and participation (the fee will be reduced to $1,250 should we reach at least 12 participants). Some scholarship assistance is available.

For Jewish Athletes Ages 9 – 12

May 3, 2020

The Mid-Atlantic Junior Maccabi Games are a one-day sports competition for Jewish athletes ages 9 – 12 (as of May 1, 2020). Athletes from JCCs across the Mid-Atlantic region compete each spring, and this is a great way for kids to experience the JCC Maccabi Games on a smaller scale prior to participating in the “big games”. There will be two age brackets: a 9 – 10 bracket and an 11 – 12 bracket.

Please note: Costs are being finalized. We anticipate it will be approximately $150 per athlete.
