- Meet the Staff
The Older Adult Center (OAC), New Beginnings, has many roles where a pair of hands, coupled with a caring heart, can make a difference in a person’s life. Whether you choose to help nourish our older population, or interact and help with tech support, know that you are doing amazing things for those who may only have our community center to turn to.

- Delivering food
Food Delivery (Meals on Heels)
The role of the food delivery driver is to deliver healthy food while maintaining it at its proper temperature per safety regulations. The task is to pick up the packed food from our community center; and safely transport it to the older adult who is homebound due to their age and health status using your personal vehicle.
Qualifications
- Must have a personal car, and cell phone to deliver the food from the Y to the recipient
- Must be able to understand directions given by the volunteer coordinator
- Must exhibit patience, kindness and discretion when delivering food to the recipient
Commitment: We ask for at least one hour commitment a day, from 11.30 am to 1:00 pm. We deliver every day Monday through Friday, and request at least one day a week to help us.
Telephone Reassurance Volunteer
provides friendly telephone calls from a volunteer to an older adult who is living alone and/or homebound. The goal of the program is to eliminate or reduce some of the concerns facing homebound seniors: isolation, loneliness, depression, anxiety and cognitive decline. Many older adults want to remain independent and age in place in their own homes; however because they are isolated or homebound, meaningful relationships are difficult to come by. Telephone reassurance volunteers will reach out by phone regularly to these seniors to offer a friendly check-in and an opportunity to feel connected to the community beyond their front door.
Qualifications:
- Must exhibit patience, kindness and discretion
- Must be able to use a computer to fill out appropriate paperwork that keeps track of details of the call
Commitment: We ask for at least one hour commitment a week, time to be determined.
Please note that this role is for a steady commitment, over the course of 12 weeks. This important work may be done from home, or from Riverdale Y. This role is highly selective, and mandates extensive training.
