Sharon Asherman

Director, New Beginnings

Sharon always knew she’d work at a community center, helping people, “but I took a few detours along the way,” she says.

As director of New Beginnings Center for Contemporary Adults 60+ since 2012, Sharon leads programming, budgeting and communications, among other priorities. Her favorite aspect of working at the Y is getting to know the many members and guests that come through the senior center – their triumphs, dilemmas, and their stories. She came to the Y from the YM-YWHA of Washington Heights, where she was also a senior center director.

Sharon’s background is in geriatric social work, and she is also a certified supervisor to social work graduate students. She earned a Master’s degree in social work from New York University.
