When a new member joins the Riverdale Y, we consider it an honor to have increased the size of our extended family. When you walk into the Y for fitness training, swimming, senior events, culture, as a child participating in educational programs, or just to attend an event, you are welcomed as a member of our family. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford the memberships, programs and services we provide to the community. Rather than exclude potential members based on financial capability, we look for ways to include them in our family to the best of our ability.
One way we do this is in the form of scholarships. When someone cannot afford to join or partake of our activities, we try to offer financial relief that will encourage them and welcome them to take part. Last year, the Riverdale Y provided over $100,000 in scholarships to people who were unable to afford the full costs of our services. Whether partial or full relief, these scholarships broaden our family, making it more inclusive and diverse. It benefits all of us, not just the recipients. Sadly, we are limited in our ability to provide these scholarships. As a non-profit organization, we work hard each year to meet the needs of the community while our fees for membership, programs and services provide less than 70% of our necessary revenue. The rest is made up by donations from the community.
If you are proud of the Y, of its traditions and inclusiveness, and want to make a difference, please consider making a donation to the Scholarship Fund at the Y. It’s easy to do. Just click the “Donate Here” button on the bottom, and make your gift online. When you come to where you’re asked if you want to support a specific program, just type in “SCHOLARSHIP”. You can give any amount you want, and every gift will be used to help another person with limited finances enjoy being part of our special family!
